The 'Magentaverse': Pantone's Colour of the Year

Lily Field

What is Pantone?

Pantone was started in 1963, introducing the colour matching system which we still use today. Starting off with a whopping 500 colours to choose from Pantone now has over 1000 colours! 1000 colours?! I don't even know all the colours of the rainbow. Pantone helps designers all over the globe to create their brand identity through colour, steer up-and-comers in the right direction and if you're like me, sit and stare at how many different shades of pink there are.

Pantone is the superhero of the colour world! With over 10 million designers and producers worldwide trusting their products and services, they're the ultimate go-to for colour control and communication from start to finish.

Using the magic of X-Rite technology, Pantone helps achieve colour consistency across all kinds of materials and finishes, whether it's for fashion, graphics or product design.

Their Standards are the bomb, featuring digital and physical colour specs and workflow tools that'll knock your socks off. Plus, the Pantone Colour Institute™ is here to save the day with customized colour standards, brand identity and product colour consulting, and even trend forecasting - including their famous Pantone Colour of the Year, Fashion Runway Colour Trend Reports, colour psychology and more.

Long story short? Pantone is the ultimate colour guru, here to make your design dreams come true!

What is the colour of the year?

This year Pantone has chosen Viva Magenta as the colour of 2023. A shade which comes from our beautiful surroundings and is part of the red family. This colour of the year is not only empowering but also bold, we are moving away from the neutrals this year and heading towards a bright future (quite literally if this is your wallpaper colour). This colour breaks all boundaries of what our interiors should look like, providing designers, both professional and non-professional, with a way to fully express themselves.

"Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength."

Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute
