Old school metallics the modern way

Up until the past couple of years, copper has just been that annoying thing that clogs up space in your wallet and somehow always finds its way into the lining of all your coat pockets. Things are looking up for little old coveted Cu now though!

It’s finally copper’s time to shine and not only because of the new 5p plastic bag legislation. This versatile chemical element has been the must-have material for a good few seasons now and it doesn’t look like it’s shaking for Autumn/Winter 2016.

Everybody from famous interior designers around the world to first time students kitting out their new digs are going cuckoo for copper. In fact, metallics in general seem to be doing the rounds right now so let me show you how it’s done…

Copper and gold tones offer a certain kind of warmth that matte surfaces just can’t so they’re the perfect addition to any interior as Jack Frost prepares for his annual comeback.

These reflective materials also provide a real retro vibe and when I say retro, I mean retro. We're talking the copper bath tubs and brass piping you might see in the background of a BBC period drama but now it's cool. Super cool, in fact.

Modern metal alloys and contemporary chrome are still taking a backseat as copper and brass take the helm at home and within the world of hospitality in particular.

Feel free to go full throttle with a brass bathtub, copper counter coverings - heck, go for a floor to ceiling metallic mural if you want to! Or alternatively, give a subtle nod to the material of the moment by updating your appliances, light fixtures or furniture with some gold, brass or copper newbies.

If you want to keep it even more low key than that, get your hands on some cute metallic accents instead. A brass candle holder here, a gold lamp shade there or some stylish copper cutlery to bring out when the in-laws come round for dinner and you'll be golden. Literally.
