Over the past several years companies have began to consider how they can make their products more environmentally friendly and we are all about sustainability and saving our lovely planet here at DCTUK. We understand how important it is to be more green and look after our planet, after all there is no planet B (that we know of...), which is why we bring to you Modulyss Cradle to Cradle Certified™ GOLD carpet tiles! 

Nine of Modulyss’s collections have been rated Cradle to Cradle certified™ GOLD and it's been a long time comin'. To reach this milestone Modulyss has had to fulfil a broad range of tough environmental and human health criteria, marking their transition towards creating safe and sustainable carpet tiles and creating a lasting positive change for the industry.

Cradle to Cradle Certified™ is a globally recognised measure of safer, more sustainable products made for the circular economy. Brands all around the world rely on the Cradle to Cradle Certified™ product standard as a pathway for designing and making products with a positive impact on people and the planet. 

Cradle to Cradle™ principles enables manufacturers to make goods designed for more than one product life cycle in an non-stop and non-toxic closed loop, tackling several major global challenges, resource scarcity, toxicity and climate change. Inspired by nature, it replaces the more traditional ‘take, make and waste’ system. 

Cradle to Cradle™ aims to show that designing with a purpose makes perfect business sense whilst simultaneously positively impacting the environment and human health. In order to become Cradle to Cradle Certified™, products must go under an extensive assessment of environment and social criteria across five categories.

Material health - Helps to ensure that all of the chemical ingredients in the product are as safe as possible for both humans and the environment through a process of inventorying, assessing and optimising material chemistries. In this category Modulyss scored Platinum (the highest possible), highlighting their products' exceptional safety to humans and the environment. Material reutilisation - Aiming to eliminate the concept of waste, this helps to ensure products remain in constant cycles of use and reuse from one product cycle to the next.  

Renewable energy and carbon management - Aims to ensure that the impact of climate changing greenhouse gases due to the manufacturing of the product is reduced or eliminated through the use of renewable energy.

Water stewardship - Ensures water is recognised as a valuable source. Companies must prove that they are using their water resources responsibly and efficiently and that the water discharged from factorises is as clean as possible.

Social fairness - The aim is to design business operations that honour all people and natural systems affected by the manufacture of a product.

Cradle to Cradle™ assists Moduylss on the journey of continuous optimisation of their products and allows them to identify the opportunities of improvement.

Modulyss Gold carpet tiles are made from 100% regenerated solution dyed PA6 yarn aka ECONYL - recycled trash from the brainboxes over at Aquafil. They also feature a brand spanking new PVC and bitumen free backing (ecoBack), consisting of a minimum 75% recycled content and can be disassembled and recycled at the end of the carpets lifetime.

Not to rain on Modulyss's parade (as it is such a huge achievement), our friends over at Desso also boast many Cradle to Cradle Certified™ carpet tiles that may be of an interest to you.

Desso was in fact the first company in the world to have its products certified against Cradle to Cradle™ 3.0 level way back in January 2013! Reaching the major milestone in 2015 by becoming the first carpet tile manufacturer in the world to achieve Cradle to Cradle™ Gold level certification, Desso has been on the move to becoming less wasteful for a while now.

Desso set out with the aim to produce environmentally responsible flooring products that deliver outstanding value in design and functionality whilst contributing to peoples health and well being. By sourcing these possible defined raw materials, introducing new manufacturing methods and collecting used carpets from clients; Desso also similarly achieves a closed loop process.

Desso Ecobase carpet tile backing boasts Cradle to Cradle™ gold certification. Made with 100% positively defined materials, Ecobase carpet tile backing contains upcycled re-engineered calcium carbonate (chalk) from local drinking water companies, it is 100% recyclable in Desso's own production process. Made in plants powered exclusively by renewable electricity - the entire backing can be separated from the carpet tile and safely recycled which generates co2 savings of up to 20% per product cycle.
