Choosing the right carpet tiles can be a difficult decision. As with most home décor choices a lot of thought goes into a big purchase like flooring as it has such an impact on the overall room’s presence. Colour, style, finish, durability, suitability – the list goes on. Once you have made your choice though comes the next crucial step – installation. Ensuring your carefully selected carpet tiles are installed correctly will help you achieve the look you originally envisaged and set out to achieve, along with providing you a beautiful looking finish for years to come
Whilst we have our installation guide available to everyone (which we recommend reading if you plan on installing your own carpet tiles), we've compiled a ‘top 5’ tips list of things to consider before, during and after installation.
1. Be prepared
The Scouts motto for very good reasons! Being prepared will minimise errors and ensure your planned installation comes together just how you’d imagined it. We’d always recommend ordering carpet tile samples for free first from us before ordering to ensure you get the right carpet tile for your room. Preparing the floor surface before installation will give you time and space to focus & lay the carpet tiles. How are you laying the carpet tiles? Monolithic? Checkerboard? If you don’t know what these terms mean, it’s easier to find out now than when everything is in front of you!
2. Tacifier or loose-lay?
This is a question we get asked a lot – do you need to use a glue, or tacifier, on carpet tiles or can they just be loose laid? The honest answer here is that it really does depend. We would always recommend using a tacifier. If the room is likely to see high levels of traffic, then for safety then we would strongly recommend this. In home environments, tacfiying your carpet tiles will help ensure an accurate fit and secure finish during installation that lasts.
3. Don’t under-estimate
When it comes to ordering carpet tiles, we strongly advise customers order an additional 10% on the square meters of carpet tiles they require. Unless your room is perfectly square (which most peoples aren’t), then you will need to cut and manipulate your carpet tiles to fit around corners, doorways, fireplaces and other obstacles. We know mistakes happen, so it’s always good to have spares should you need them. In the long run, having a few spares just in case of any severe stains is part of the beauty of carpet tiles – just pull up the old one, drop the spare in and it’s as good as new.
4. The right carpet tiles for the right environment
Is the carpet tile you’ve chosen suitable for the room it’s being laid in? If it’s a kitchen or bathroom, does it have protection against this increased exposure to moisture? Carpet tiles like the Heuga Le Bistro have a special micro bacterial treated fibre yarn used in its construction, making it ideal for this type of environment. Likewise, heavy-traffic environments require a carpet tile that’s up to the job and can stand the test of time. We’re always on hand to provide any assistance to questions you may have – if you’re not sure, we’re here to help.
5. Spare a thought for aftercare
Regular vacuum cleaning, treating any stains that occur as soon as possible and following manufacturers care guidance will all ensure that your brand new carpet tiles stay looking clean and fresh for many years to come. Our advice guide that you can download is packed with further details that are worth taking into consideration.
