Carpet tiles and your carbon footprint

Carpet tiles and your carbon footprint
You’re probably getting a bit sick of us telling you how bloomin’ brilliant carpet tiles are by now aren’t you? Well just bear with us for a little bit longer because you’re really going to love this next one, promise. It’s going to be of particular interest to those of you who are guilty of not paying the golden recycling rules enough attention (and there are definitely still plenty of you out there) so listen up because we’re here to tell you how carpet tiles can make being ‘greener’ a whole lot less complex and time consuming.

Improving the planet one carpet tile at a time

Okay so without further ado, let us tell you more about how carpet tiles can help you reduce your carbon footprint without so much as a hint of hard work…

Less unnecessary wastage - Unlike whacking great rolls of carpet, modular tiles enable you to purchase a far more specific amount of materials which is not only great news for your budget, it also means a serious drop in harmful wastage. Individual tiles can also be easily lifted to replace or maintain, which again, is ideal for your finances and the planet you live on. Win, win!

Respect for recycled materials - Just to name one example, Modulyss has worked alongside Aquafil to perfect the ECONYL© fibres which are incorporated into many of their carpet tile ranges after waste nylon is reground and made perfect for reuse. The brand’s nifty Back2Back secondary backing also incorporates surplus materials from the cutting process into the durable backing of their carpet tiles. All of the tiles on our site are 100% recyclable too so feel free to get creative with your offcuts.

No need for toxic solvents - All of the carpet tiles we sell are what we call loose lay tiles, which means there’s no need for toxic solvents or any other harmful sticky substances when it comes to installing your new flooring arrangement. This means no damage to your subfloor and a drastically reduced impact on our delicate environment. If you do feel the need for some extra security in the form of adhesive then go for some TacTiles instead - no stress, no mess, no damage.

Our eco-savvy sidekicks

When sourcing the products we offer to our customers, we only ever work with ethically responsible suppliers who understand the importance of eco-friendly processes and making the most out of the natural materials Mother Nature kindly provides us with. The brands which we stock and have developed great relationships with after nearly a decade in the business (including Heuga, Interface, Modulyss and Paragon) are flying the flag for sustainable style and we’re as pleased as punch to have them onboard HMS DCTUK.

In 1994, while Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men were topping the musical charts, Mr Ray Anderson was experiencing an eco epiphany, which lead him to front a collaborative venture that eventually became the Interface brand we know and love today. Now one of the main ringleaders in the fight to make sustainability accessible to all, Interface hopes to be sourcing 100% of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2020. This is all part of a commitment to ‘Mission Zero’, which has been put in place to help nurture a better and more healthy planet for us all to live on.

Oh and let’s not forget the wonderful Paragon, which manufactures all of its products in the lowest carbon producing carpet tile factory in Europe. In fact, all of the suppliers we work with operate from factories which use solar, wind, tidal or biogas (fermented food waste to make energy) to power their processes. Some also make a conscious effort to use low energy LED lighting, reduced transportation and rain water systems to ensure the products you’re purchasing give more back to the environment than they take. Pretty cool stuff, right?

Our top eco-friendly tiles

As we mentioned up there, all of the suppliers we work with run a green operation so each and every one of our 100% recyclable tiles are a fantastic choice for the eco-conscious customer but we thought we’d let you in on just a few of our favourites…

Modulyss Eco100C and Modulyss Millenium100 are partners in planet-saving design and both part of a collection of carpet tiles manufactured specifically with our precious planet in mind. Using the innovative ECONYL© fibres that we’ve just been singing the praises of, these ranges also look the part with their earthy colour palettes and natural textures. We also love Paragon’s Toccarre for it’s biomimicry-inspired shades, and Interface’s Transformation range for it’s non-directional, waste-reducing installation process.
