Burmatex Refit CDG Airport

Carpet tiles have traditionally been designed and manufactured with larger installations in mind; their hard-wearing construction and simplicity of in installation over large areas are just two key features that make them ideal. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that when tasked with refitting the Charles de Gaulle Departure Terminal F2, the architect immediately turned to carpet tiles for the flooring. Paris’ largest airport is also one of the most active passenger airports in Europe, meaning that the heavy contract application of carpet tiles was always going to appeal. In this case, the architect had approached Burmatex to take on the expansive 6,250m2 installation.

Burmatex’s design team set about coming up with a stylish installation design, which would be both attractive yet safe. Opting to go for a combination of both the Burmatex Strands 10, Strands 30 (a custom design) and Strands 60 were selected to create a symmetrical rectangular layout to be used for seating areas in the departure terminal. These help to both highlight these areas for travellers, as well as break up the main ‘corridor’ areas where predominant traffic flows through. For heavy traffic areas such as corridors and walkways, the newly styled ‘Up’ carpet tile from Burmatex was deployed. The uniform and flat designed carpet tile was ideal for suiting the requirement for a plain yet highly durable flooring solution for these such areas. The contrast created between the two really suits a typical airport environment – funnelling people quickly along the plainer design of the ‘Up’ carpet tile, and visually slowing traffic when approaching and using seating areas.
