How the interior world of hospitality is evolving

Nurturing the great indoors

The hospitality sector is jumping head-first into biophilia in a big way this year and my crystal ball predicts this green-fingered approach won't be going anywhere for 2017 either.

Described beautifully as "an innate and genetically determined affinity of human beings with the natural world" by biologist E. O. Wilson, Biophilia has become a popular interior design theme of late and with all of it's physical and mental advantages, I ain't surprised.

Stone pieces, exposed brickwork, bare concrete, natural fabrics, indoor water features, earthy palettes, lots of windows for fresh lighting and plenty of plants. That's the look we're going for for the foreseeable future and it's all about opening the door to a little of Mother Nature's magic to create a hospitality habitat that's as gentle on the eyes as it is on the soul.

A nod towards the novelty

Forget uniform rooms, identical interiors and strict brand guidelines that shackle you to one specific section of the spectrum. Customers these days want something that is going to look #cool on their Instagram feeds and you need to deliver with a little nudge towards nostalgic novelty. Nothing too tacky or ostentatious mind, just something visually stimulating that is going to raise an eyebrow here or muster a giggle there.

Under this umbrella comes a trendy new tendency towards customisation, bespoke furniture and what might be better known as 'one-offs' - those show-stopping statements that you'll rarely find in combination any place else. Classy creativity.

This means it's time to shine for boutique hotels and eateries that pride themselves on their niche personalities and unique aesthetics. Granted, this can sometimes be an expensive look to execute so it's a good job we're on hand to help you do boutique on a budget.

Mad for metallic accents

Last time I checked into the DCTUK blog, I told you all about how old school metallics were making a modern comeback in domestic dwellings and well, the same can be said for the world of hospitality too.

Whichever way you look these days, you just can't escape the chaos of copper. It's bedecking beds and furniture, it's threaded through fabrics, it's taking over light fixtures everywhere and don't even get me started on wall hangings, table decor and hardware accenting. Gold and brass are hot on its heels too so take it from me, it's time to hop onboard the metallics bandwagon.

An emphasis on entrance spaces

You know me, forever banging on about the best ways you can make an entrance in your residential or commercial interiors but it's time to stop rolling your eyes and listen up, chuck. Entrance spaces and reception areas are a pretty big deal right now so you better give yours a good spruce.

The grander and more luxurious the better. Like, I'm talking upholstered furniture, design-led flooring, bespoke reception desks, indoor water features, extravagant staircases, weird and wonderful wall features - the lot.

A bangin' set of carpet tiles are the perfect place to start so now we're done here, head on over to our Entrances page and start shopping!
